| CALEB STRONG - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 6/1798 #CALEB STRONG Signed 1798 letter to Thomas Sedgwick, telling him that farmers that he represents could be ruined if forced to honor a contract Autograph letter signed "Caleb Strong". 2 pages, 8x13½ (one sheet folded, front and verso). Northampton, Massachusetts, June 1798. Addressed to "The Honble Thomas Sedgwick" in Stockbridge. Letter in regard to three pleas in a suit "Wm. Wynkoop against Hall & al." In part: "The signers of the notes are all farmers in comfortable circumstances but if they are obliged to pay the Contracts every one of them would be ruined. They gave solid notes without knowing that it made any difference. The Pltff has promised several times since the actions were brought that he would give up the notes and take back the Deed, and they have expected it would be filled without a Trial, but the last time he was applied to he said that altho he knew the notes ought to be given up, his Partners were unwilling to consent to it, and threatened to make him pay their part if he did it, & therefore he could do nothing about it." This letter was written between Strong's stints as Massachusetts senator and governor. Strong (1745-1819, born in Northampton, Massachusetts) was one of his state's first two U.S. Senators (1789-1796) and served as Governor of Massachusetts from 1800 to 1807 and 1812 to 1816. In his first seven one-year terms, Governor Strong concentrated on creating a penitentiary system and restructuring the Commonwealth's court system. Strong's later four one-year terms were highlighted by his refusal to release the Commonwealth's militia for service against Great Britain in the War of 1812. Governor Strong opposed the war, and as a framer of the U.S. Constitution he argued that governors have the prerogative to determine how and when their militias will be deployed.
